I have been online with www.studphotography.com for about 3 months. 2 months ago I got to page 1 of google. I am now on page 18! Admittedly I had a month of inactivity but I now have a news page which is updated with photos and text and I am getting more regular daily hits than ever. I have changed the search engine optimisation words/descriptions regularly and I have tweaked about with other small wording across the pages. The entry on page 18 ofgoogle is for my “background page” and my homepage is nowhere to be seen. The news page which I started last week is nowhere as well although it has been linked to facebook. Last month my visitor numbers were 127 with 470 impressions, this month already i’m on 134 visitors and 450 impressions. I advertise with adwords for £5 a day. What is going wrong? Why am I not at least further up the page rankings? I know they are not earth shatering numbers but considering I got to page with no effort why am I being punished, whipped and beaten?

It all depends on the method you used.

The files have not been publised to the domain itself yet and would therefore not be referenced, so I would recommend that you re-register.

If you used our tools when you were logging in to the free space then any registration would only apply to the generic free address listed on my first post.

Since the files have now been moved and are now located correctly, when published they are in the correct place to be referenced by a search engine.

There are many ways to register and improve your search engine rankings so it’s not something I can provide a hugely comprehensive answer on in the forum.

You can find plenty of good advice by searching the term “Search engine optimisation” on the internet.

Hope this helps

Good morning planet bt, my website has gone awol. I’m a complete novice at this so its probably something obvious I’m missing. I published the website www.kelvinwindow-cleaning.co.uk , 3 weeks ago and registered it with the search engines but there’s still no sign of it. Each time try to get help from bt I end up with a salesperson who has little technical expertise. Can anyone out there help? If you see my website can you tell it to come home, I’m missing it.

Sorry, but no web hosting company has any influence over your site appearing or not appearing in a search engine. All they do is make the site available to the internet and nothing more.

When you say your site is not appearing in any search engines… well I suppose this depends on what you searched for. I found it on the front page of Google using the term “Pearce learning and development” which proves it is in at least one search engine. Maybe not for the phrases people are searching for, but it is still in there.

Getting your site ranked highly is your responsibility and there are some things you can do:

You can add keywords to every page using the EasySiteWizard Pro pencil icon

You can provide links to other sites and have them link back to you

You can update your content regularly

I would do a search for Search Engine Optimisation if I was you and see what other things you can do to get your site noticed.

I’m pretty much at the end of my tether with BY web hosting.

I found the design interface appalling and the help a joke, so this is a last resort before scrapping the site and going somewhere else.

I’ve used other companies to host websites and without exception the search engines have picked them up within a week.

I’ve never had to submit a sitemap either – the websites are just instantly picked up when doing a search on the comapny name – or something near it.

Four weeks on and it still isn’t happening.

The website address is www.pearceld.co.uk

Any suggestions before I toddle off?

Visitor statistics collect information about at least two sorts of visitor:

People, who usually receive the file favicon.ico;

Robots, who access robots.txt or sitemap.xml, at least if they are well-mannered robots.

Both sorts are welcome, because I depend on the search engines’ robots to let people find the site. Ultimately, though, I really want to know which pages get seen by people.

I am interested in statistics for both sorts of visit, but I would very much like to separate them. At the moment, the only way I know to discover which content pages are seen by the two sorts of visit is to look at the daily detailed logs.

Does anyone know of a way to configure visitor statistics to accumulate numbers for people and robots separately? Something like a utility to process the existing, behind-the-scenes logs would be ideal, because I am wary of scaring visitors away with anything that is visibly collecting data.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

     Nigel.
