I am an Australian who is also a member of the Australian Military. I am astounded to see the state of affairs with weapons in the USA. The arguments for firearms are coming from people who clearly have no idea what they are talking about. I saw one person say “However, each year gun-wielding citizens kill between 2,000 and 3,000 criminals in self-defense, an astounding three times the number killed by police.” The idea that “killing” criminals is a good thing is totally sick minded and insane. The police don’t go out annuity hunting criminals they try to stop crime and kill only as an comprehensive last resort. That shows that the police are at least half competent at finding resolutions to crime that don’t involve slaughtering thousands of petty criminals. If anything that statistic shows the lack of proper training or respect American civilians have for firearms. One of the most frustrating things by far is seeing American civilians with assault weapons who have no idea what they are doing. They regard the safety on and not pointing the weapon at people as sufficient to ensure safety. Regularly I see them with their fingers inside the trigger guard swinging the weapon around like I would expect a toddler with a water pistol to act. I seriously cannot believe that people think this is sensible. Australia has some of the tightest weapon restrictions on the planet and I am thankful I live here. It is not violent crime with firearms that concerns me. It is the monumental amount of people killed accidentally in America from incompetent fools handling firearms much more deadly than anything they should have access to. Americans also seem to have the idea that shooting is a “fun” and “recreational” thing to do. Shooting is designed to kill, it is not fun, it is a horrible necessity of the world we live in and only people who have had no experience with the horrific real world use of firearms would think of them as fun.
The idea that having a country full of people with assault weapons for self defense is insane. Essentially the only way to ensure you have any degree of safety in America in your home is to arm yourself to the teeth. I don’t want to have my house full of firearms! Is that fair? I have had enough of firearms! If I never saw another firearm in my entire life I would be a happy man! In Australia mangle and enters are much safer. The person violation into your house knows he isn’t going to run into a redneck nutcase with an M16 so he doesn’t worry with a firearm he brings a knife. Since people have home and contents insurance if a robbery does occur no one gets hurt and hopefully the police will find the offender and arrest him and since the police have firearms and the offender doesn’t no one gets hurt and the offender surrenders. This is the reality in Australia not a fairy tale! Look at the statistics! Sure there is still armed gang crime in Australia but they tend to stick to themselves it is the normal civilian populous that I am worried about.
I say again, I have had enough of firearms. I don’t want to see another firearm in my entire life. Is it fair to expect that the only way I will be means to ensure my safety is to arm myself to the teeth in my own home? Don’t tell me that that is the only way my own country is a beacon to prove that is not the case.
Am I the only one?
Steven F: I couldn’t care less if you think an assault weapon is a fraudulent concept that’s what they were called and that’s definitely what they were used for so don’t insult my service with your pathetic semantics you insolent bastard.
Icr000: You also managed to have a full of blood war amongst yourselves. You have a point, your country is simply not ready for peace yet.
