Workgroups can be fickle.  The problem is windows workgroups mysteriously works out which PC will act as the server, or computer browser and this can change frequently depending on which PC’s are turned on first in the morning etc.  This means it can work one day and not the next depending on security settings on the browser PC.

Might be worth reading this post for further info.
